Concern about misuse of tanning booths may be spreading since “tanning mom” ignited nationwide controversy when she was charged with taking her 5-year-old daughter into a booth. She denied the charge, claiming the child was sunburned from playing outdoors.
If Susan Ostlund’s lucky, the customers at her Grand Forks tanning salon will treat the federal tanning tax going into effect today the way most consumers treat price hikes at the gas pump: They’ll be mad but they won’t stop going.
While North Dakota charges no taxes on tanning services, the health reform bill adds a 10 percent tax to tanning-related services, slated to take effect July 1.
