There has been a lot of talk about synthetic drug use in our area recently. Two teen-aged males died apparently from overdosing on synthetic drugs in the month of June. These were two separate cases.

A man connected to a Grand Forks drug ring pleaded guilty Monday to conspiring to distribute synthetic drugs blamed for the deaths of two teens, a federal charge that carried a mandatory life sentence if he were convicted.
For the first time, federal prosecutors have charged people outside the Grand Forks area in the synthetic drug conspiracy blamed in the deaths of two teenagers and for sending others to the hospital this summer.
A federal judge Monday sentenced Wesley Sweeney to 12.5 years in prison for his confessed role in providing synthetic hallucinogens that led to the death of Christian Bjerk and the hospitalization of a 15-year-old boy in Grand Forks in June.
A co-owner of a Mandan smoke shop has been sentenced to serve a year in prison for conspiring to sell synthetic marijuana. Big Willies co-owner William Nickel will not have to serve the sentence until an appeal is heard by the North Dakota Supreme Court.
Facing four federal charges carrying penalties of life-in-prison, Andrew Spofford, in a deal with prosecutors, pleaded guilty here Monday to making and distributing the hallucinogens that killed two teenagers in Grand Forks in June.
