Though it might seem impossible to many, a thriving scene has emerged on a beach north of Duluth, where about 50 surfers are braving the frigid water for waves they swear can compare to some of the best surfing in Hawaii or California.
Gerard Butler is OK after being held underwater by some big waves while filming for a movie about a surfer at Mavericks, a famed Northern California surf break known for treacherous, stories-high waves.
Hawaii is preparing to become the first state in the nation to make surfing an official high school sport, joining the likes of football, basketball, volleyball and swimming, starting as early as spring 2013.
