A new report from state health officials says the number of sexually transmitted diseases has climbed to a new record in Minnesota. The Department of Health says there were 19,547 cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis in 2011, an increase of about 1,500 from the previous year.

Health officials were alarmed by a new report Wednesday that showed a surge in sexually transmitted disease rates in Minnesota, with chlamydia setting a new record last year and syphilis reaching a 30-year high.
North Dakota ranks 46th in the nation in rate of teen pregnancy, which means it has one of the lowest rates in the nation. Furthermore, teen pregnancy rates among 15-19-year-olds decreased in our state by 21 percent from 1988 to 2005.
By the way, it is in the past 15 years to 20 years that abstinence-education programs have emerged and become a positive presence in many settings. A robust body of research has begun to show that many of these programs do, indeed, make a difference.
A Faribault, Minn., woman already on parole for threatening elected officials in Austin, Minn., was charged this week with making bomb threats against 16 post offices in southern Minnesota.

Landmark studies from three African countries including Uganda previously found circumcision lowered men's chance of catching the AIDS virus by up to 60 percent. The new study stems from the Uganda research and looked at protection against three other STDs. The findings are reported in todays New England Journal of Medicine
Early syphilis cases last year were up 40 percent from 2007 after showing signs of leveling off in recent years. Early syphilis -- meaning infections less than one year old -- is the most infectious stage of the disease.
