A North Dakota man has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for breaking into a post office on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation and stealing a U.S. Treasury check made out to another person.
A 31-year-old St. Michael, N.D., woman appeared in U.S. District Court in Grand Forks on Thursday, charged with abuse or neglect of a child resulting in serious bodily injury in connection with the June 13 death of a Spirit Lake Nation toddler.
A St. Michael, N.D., woman is charged with felony theft after court documents state she was arrested after spending 11 hours in a South Fargo Walmart last Friday, then attempting to shoplift 78 items concealed about her person without paying for them.
A St. Michael, N.D., man has been sentenced to three years in prison, with a year already served, and three years of probation for killing a Grand Forks man while driving drunk, the North Dakota U.S. Attorney’s office said Monday.
“The FBI and BIA investigations continue,” Timothy Purdon, the U.S. attorney for North Dakota said Wednesday, referring to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Although the autopsy has been completed, he added, “We are awaiting lab test results associated with the investigation.”
A St. Michael, N.D., man admitted in federal court Tuesday to causing a drunken driving accident that led to a Grand Forks man’s death. Douglas Allen Baker, also known as Douglas Lawrence, faces up to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter in U.S. District Court in Fargo.
The death Saturday of a 2-month-old girl whose mother was suspected of drug abuse and child neglect is the latest episode in what critics have described as an ongoing crisis of children at risk at Spirit Lake Nation, according to a federal official.

A St. Michael, N.D., man who led law enforcement on a high-speed chase west of Devils Lake was charged Thursday in Ramsey County District Court. Marshall Demarce, 23, is facing a charge of reckless endangerment after he rammed into a woman’s vehicle carrying two young children in the parking lot of the Devils Lake Law Enforcement Center on Feb. 19.
