"I have been doing this a long time and watched all of the professional teams suffer serious injuries," veteran Twin Cities sports columnist Sid Hartman writes. "But the fact that point guard Ricky Rubio will be out for the rest of the season after suffering a torn left ACL on Friday night against the Lakers will affect the franchise in many ways and is the most serious one I've encountered for more than one reason."
A new covered stadium in the Twin Cities area "would not only be the home to two preseason games, eight regular-season games and any playoff games for the Vikings, but it would also allow this area to compete for many national events," Twin Cities columnist-broadcaster Sid Hartman writes.
It was announced Thursday that Tom Kelly will have his No. 10 retired by the Twins -- a deserving honor, without a doubt, for the man who was in charge for the only World Series titles the Twins have won (and the only titles among the Vikings, Wild, North Stars and Timberwolves, we might also add).
"With so many lawmakers on both sides of the aisle either ducking the issue or clueless, it's hard to envision anything happening either way," St. Paul columnist Tom Powers says. "It's just difficult to get a handle on where we are."
"I believe," Minneapolis sports columnist Jim Souhan writes, "this is the question that needs to be answered: Should anybody's job be safe right now? Leslie Frazier's? Christian Ponder's? Any coach's? This was a pathetic display."
"Don't misunderstand. Willingham should do very well with the Minnesota Twins. In terms of a potent, right-handed bat, he is exactly what the team needs," St. Paul columnist Tom Powers writes. "But he is replacing one of the great class acts in the game of baseball."
"Regardless of why they made the move, they made the right one," St. Paul sports columnist Tom Powers said. "The organization needed a shake-up. As much as I like Bill (Smith), everything appeared to go to hell in a bucket last season."
"It is a cinch to pass," writes Twin Cities sports columnist-broadcaster Sid Hartman, who submits a racino (a combined race track and casino) would raise money for a new Minnesota Vikings stadium with "money left over to improve funds for schools, roads, etc."
"I believe Ponder should get the chance to start this year so the Vikings know where they stand at quarterback in the future," veteran columnist Sid Hartman writes. "But making your debut against the Packers, who won here last year 31-3 and went on to win the Super Bowl, is a tough start for a young quarterback."
