UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname will be before the State Board of Higher Education again, and its fate remains as clouded as ever.
Board members had previously indicated they were ready to ditch the nickname, even if the Supreme Court hasn’t considered a lawsuit that affects the nickname.

Nickname issue likely won’t be discussed at next board meeting 
The State Board of Higher Education will meet again in January, but likely won’t take any action on the UND Fighting Sioux nickname at the meeting, a board member said Tuesday.

Busy week ahead on nickname issue 
Anti-nickname rally set for Wednesday ahead of meeting to possibly extend deadlineIt’s going to be a busy week for partisans on both sides of UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname. Wednesday, opponents of the Fighting Sioux nickname are holding a rally at 9 a.m. at the UND Memorial Union. Thursday, the SBHE meets to consider deadline extension.

Spirit Lake issues nickname resolution 
The Spirit Lake Tribal Council has approved a resolution recognizing the tribe’s support of UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname. According to nickname opponent Terry Morgan, whose mother is tribal Chairwoman Myra Pearson, confirmed that the council did make the decision. He said that rather than embracing the nickname, the council simply acknowledged the vote.

AG: State may move nickname deadline 
North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem is suggesting the state push back the deadline for UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname past Oct. 1.
“I hope they do push back that deadline,” he said. “The purpose of that settlement that we reached with the NCAA was designed to assure the tribes that they would have an opportunity to voice their opinions on the use of the nickname.”

The situation at Standing Rock is a bigger wildcard Supporters of UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname in the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation aren’t backing down, in spite of an earlier decision by the state that makes it extremely difficult for the university to keep the nickname.

Unknowns remain after nickname vote 
Many issues are still up in the air despite a decisive vote of 774-378, according to official results, in support of UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname on the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation. A State Board of Higher Education committee researching how the state’s two namesake tribes feel about the nickname will still meet with Spirit Lake tribal members in the next few months.
