The driver of a Spanish train that crashed killing 79 people said he was talking by phone to the train's on-board ticket inspector moments before the accident but hung up just before the train left the tracks, a court said Wednesday.
The announcement came as the government reported more grim economic news: a big rise in claims for jobless benefits last month and a new forecast that Spanish economic output will fall 1.7 percent this year, worse than the 1 percent forecast recently by the EU and the 1.5 percent predicted just weeks ago the Bank of Spain.

In its latest projections, the European Commission, the European Union's executive body, forecast a 0.3 percent contraction in the eurozone economy for 2012, with Greece's economy leading the way downward with a massive 4.4 percent decline.

Encouraging signs out of Europe and a surprisingly strong report on the U.S. housing market drove the Dow Jones industrial average up more than 300 points Tuesday. It was the best day for stocks this month.
Spain was in recession for nearly two years and posted only listless growth this year, and some economists expect its growth could turn negative again.
The country's staggering jobless rate had risen to around 23 percent overall and around 46 percent for people under 25.
The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 159 points to 11,746 as of 1 p.m. Eastern time. It had wavered between gains and losses earlier in the day. Cisco Systems Inc. had the largest fall of the 30 stocks in the Dow, 2.7 percent. Intel Corp. dropped 2.4 percent.
Basques digesting the apparent end of separatist group ETA's armed campaign are taking it with quiet, careful relief. Because the more than four decades of violence was too agonizing, there was no celebratory dancing in the streets or champagne bottles being popped open.
