The newspaper stories, nearing 100 years old, are confusing to say the least. Why Portano, also referred to as Pirritano, maddeningly, for any newspaper person, went on his murderous spree Nov. 16, 1923, will probably never be known. But for Beltrami County sheriff’s Deputies Scott Wherley and Lee Anderson, Wilson’s story merits proper recognition. And a proper memorial. He is the only deputy to die in the line of duty in the 116-year existence of the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office.

Christopher Lee Dewey, the Mahnomen County deputy sheriff who died in August 2010 from gunshot injuries sustained in a 2009 incident, will be memorialized Thursday thursday at the annual service for law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in Indian Country.
The men and women of these agencies, while called away from their families for weeks at a time, worked tirelessly and professionally during an extremely trying time for our communities.
We greatly appreciate all that they have done for us, and we sincerely thank them for their service.
I would like to thank everyone who has signed the petition to recall Walsh County Sheriff Lauren Wild.
I have driven to or called almost every farm in southwestern Walsh County, and the residents have made my job as a circulator very rewarding.
