Grand Forks homeless shelter appealing for donations to cover food, lodging costs in 2012 Around 120 people, mostly men, are staying in the shelter each night. That’s up from around 115 last winter.
But the shelter's executive director says it's not completely unexpected because of influx of people from other states moving to North Dakota to look for a job or start a new life.
The state Department of Human Services has awarded grants to open shelters in Cass Lake, Pine County, Mankato, Faribault and Marshall. At the same time, the department is cutting funding for several Twin Cities programs, including a drop-in center for homeless adults in St. Paul.
An organization that serves victims of domestic violence said more North Dakotans sought help in 2009. The North Dakota Council on Abused Women’s Services is comprised of 21 local shelters. The organization said it served 4,569 new victims of domestic violence in 2009, 7 percent more than the previous year.
A study released today finds that an alarming percentage of food assistance recipients in North Dakota have skipped or skimped on meals and have been forced to choose between buying food and paying for housing, utilities or medicine.
ST. PAUL — Heavy snow is believed to have caused a ceiling to collapse at Maplewood Mall in St. Paul. Chad Capp, vice president of Shock Cellular, told KSTP-TV that a large piece of drywall dropped 25 feet on a kiosk Saturday morning. He believes it was because of heavy snow on the roof.
