Deadline passes for Indian settlement 
Friday was the deadline for American Indians to apply for their share of the second installment of the Cobell settlement with the federal government, a $3.4 billion redress of faulty U.S. handling of Indian lands and money over many years.

An Oklahoma man accused of hiring his handyman to kill a North Dakota dentist has waived extradition and will be returned to North Dakota to face a charge of conspiracy to commit murder. Gene Kirkpatrick, 63, Jones, Okla., is accused of paying Michael Nakvinda, 41, $3,000 to kill Philip Gattuso, who was Kirkpatrick’s son-in-law. Nakvinda is charged with murder.

USDA aims to resolve Indian farmers' claims 
The Obama administration intends to seek resolution to a lawsuit filed by American Indian farmers who alleged discrimination in the granting of federal agricultural loans over three decades. The lawsuit, filed in 1999, contends Indian farmers and ranchers lost about $500 million during the past three decades because of discrimination in lending from the Agriculture Department’s Farm Service Agency.

The Highway Patrol has identified the two women killed in a head-on crash west of New Town. Authorities said Trivian Rush, 25, Minot and Vikilynn Standish, 27, Bismarck, died when the car they were in crossed the center line and struck a pickup truck just before 6 a.m. Sunday on state Highway 23. The patrol said Rush was driving the car.
