The annual clash of ideas at the Capitol is fraught with risk for seven lawmakers seeking to be Minnesota’s next governor. While they take tough votes and tie their success to initiatives that might fail, their outsider opponents can criticize from the sidelines. Legislators can appear ineffective because of gridlock or be muddied by unwanted sideshows. And even within their own party, they have to watch their backs for intrigue from rivals.

MINNESOTA LEGISLATURE: Senate votes to extend health care for poor 
The Minnesota Senate has voted to extend the General Assistance Medical Care program due to run out of money next month. The bill from Democratic Sen. Linda Berglin passed on a 45-20 vote. Berglin said the plan would cover nearly 85,000 low-income adults over the next 16 months, by tapping nearly $160 million from the state’s general fund and paying hospitals less for treating patients on the program.

The state teachers union said one more school district settled a contract ahead of Friday’s midnight deadline. That leaves an estimated 28 districts that missed the deadline. Warroad school to go to 4-day week 
The public school board in Warroad, Minn., voted this week to go to a four-day school week starting next fall, as part of cost-cutting effort.
Phil Heppner, chairman of the school board, said the vote was 4-2 Monday night for the change.
