OBIT: Fred Scheel, 90, sporting goods businessman, philanthropist, photographer

He was a World War II veteran, an accomplished photographer, a successful businessman, a philanthropist, a missionary and a devoted family man. Fred B. Scheel, who died Saturday at age 90, was the third generation in the line of Scheel men to own and operate the family’s sporting goods empire that began in 1902 as a small hardware and general merchandise store in Sabin, Minn. During his 40-plus years with the business, the Scheels brand expanded into sporting goods, eventually including the launch of the first Scheels All Sports Superstore in 1989 in Grand Forks.

Motorcyclist cited for driving 128 mph in 55-mph zone south of Moorhead

A 21-year-old Barnesville, Minn., man was pulled over Tuesday for driving a motorcycle 128 mph in a 55-mph zone south of Moorhead, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. According to a news release, Jacob Louis Gehrig, was stopped on his motorcycle without incident and cited for driving the excessive speed, which is a $385 fine. In addition, drivers charged with driving in excess of 100 mph can have their driving privileges revoked for a six-month period, the State Patrol said. The incident happened at about 1:30 p.m. when a state tropper clocked the southbound motorcycle on County Road 52 between Sabin and Baker, Minn., about 10 miles south of Moorhead.
