A look at the 2013 National Running Survey, conducted by RunningUSA, gives all kinds of insight into our sport. The publication, released earlier this year, provides details on the profile, habits and preferences of runners across the country.
In a bit of a surprise last week, race officials with the Wild Hog Half Marathon said they would delay the jump to a full marathon for a year. No doubt, hosting a full marathon is a lot of work, and shouldn’t be done without considerable thought, planning and resources.
As Stacy Kusler watched runners from the Grand Forks Wild Hog Half Marathon begin to cross the finish line, she said this was her favorite part. Kusler was one of hundreds who volunteered at the race Saturday morning, all of whom bundled up to combat the cold, rainy weather to prepare food, maintain aid stations, greet runners and hand out medals.
Right out of college, Devin Monson was content to be an assistant track and field coach at UND. That was a year ago. Times have changed, however. Monson now has his focus on the 2016 Olympic Trials, where his goal is to qualify for the Olympic Games in the 5K and 10K races.
Dick Beardsley has run marathons in several foreign countries. The 57-year-old was one of the central figures in one of the legendary Boston Marathons. He’s been inducted into several athletic halls of fame. Now Beardsley is back in Grand Forks, which was one of his first stops on his marathon trail.
