As UND’s Fighting Sioux hockey team heads back to St. Paul for the NCAA tournament this weekend, two extra “referees” will be watching: the NCAA itself, which has banned the beleaguered nickname and logo from tournament play, and the state of North Dakota, which by law requires that the team be known as the Fighting Sioux.

OUR OPINION SUNDAY: Carlson should make nickname change happen 
Pulling the goalie at the end of a hockey game usually doesn’t work, either. And in the end, that’s what the North Dakota law commanding UND to keep the Fighting Sioux nickname amounted to. It was a last-ditch effort against long odds to get the NCAA to change its mind. But it failed. Now, state leaders should turn toward repealing the law. And House Majority Leader Al Carlson, R-Fargo, should take the lead.
