It is still not known if the soldier accused of killing 17 Afghans was ever diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder — but even if he had been, that alone would not have prevented him from being sent back to war.
A discharged Marine private who slit his wrists in a suicide attempt is fighting his military conviction for deliberately injuring himself, arguing the punishment is inconsistent with the armed forces' efforts to battle a rise in suicides during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Spc. Dan Olson, a soldier in the North Dakota National Guard, sought assistance from the American Legion Department of North Dakota to create a program to encourage veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or considering suicide to get help. An avid biker, Olson decided cycling for the cause was the route he would take. “Pedaling for PTSD” was formed.
The fact is that PTSD is real, and it needs to be addressed now.
All too many of our servicemen and women are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from PTSD symptoms such as sleeplessness, anger, anxiety and depression as they try to adjust to life back home. These are the invisible wounds of war.
The U.S. Senate has passed a resolution designating Sunday as National Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Day.
