A civil lawsuit filed Wednesday by a man who claims he was sexually abused by priest nearly 40 years ago is the first to be brought since the Minnesota Legislature loosened the statute of limitations on such crimes, attorneys for the accuser said.

He faces felony charges in Minnesota district court in Roseau, Minn., that he sexually assaulted Peterson in 2004 when she was 14 and another girl who was 16 in 2005. He's been a fugitive in India, working as a priest, since the charges were filed in Roseau in 2006.

Lawrence Murphy’s sexual assaults of boys didn’t stop after the Catholic Church moved him to the Diocese of Superior in the 1970s, said two men who claim they were victims of the priest in northern Wisconsin.
