Under pressure from animal rights activists and sensing a shift in consumer sentiment, several major pork producers have agreed to phase out gestation crates and switch to more open pens.Experts say at least some of those expenses are likely to be passed on in the price of ham, bacon, chops and sausage.
Some say 80 percent of what the federal government does is unconstitutional. Lobbyists for special interests would have much less power if the government stuck to its constitutional limits. There would be no large government pie to fight over.
North Dakota is one of the few states to have a budget surplus.
With that in mind, I wonder why senators and representatives from North Dakota find it necessary to attach $142 million in pork to major appropriations bills such as the defense bill?
