The attorney for an ex-nurse found guilty of encouraging two depressed people to commit suicide is asking the Minnesota Court of Appeals to overturn his conviction, saying his actions were constitutionally protected free speech.
A Minnesota nurse who was supposed to sedate a patient before surgery instead took most of the painkillers for herself and told the patient to “man up” — giving him such a small dose of medication that he was writhing in pain on the operating table, according to criminal charges filed Wednesday.
A former Minnesota nurse who told police he went on the Internet and encouraged dozens of depressed people to kill themselves for the “thrill of the chase” was charged Friday with helping a Canadian woman and a British man commit suicide, authorities said.
Forest Lake, Minn., police said they used a stun gun on a naked man who ran in a freeway median claiming to be God and the devil. Police responded to a call Thursday afternoon reporting a man running on Interstate 35.

A former assistant Morrison County attorney is accused of trying to take a picture of a woman in a dressing room at a Minneapolis store. Jason Rolloff, 39, Little Falls, was charged in Hennepin County with four counts, including privacy interference and indecent conduct.
A northern Minnesota television anchor has quit her job to work full-time in Haiti as a nurse. Julie Pearce, 29, has been with KBJR-TV in Duluth since 2006, most recently as a weekend anchor. She is also a nurse. She graduated from the College of St. Scholastica’s post-baccalaureate nursing program in August and has passed the Minnesota boards.
A former nurse who authorities say got his kicks by visiting Internet suicide chat rooms and encouraging depressed people to kill themselves is under investigation in at least two deaths and could face criminal charges that could test the limits of the First Amendment. Investigators said William Melchert-Dinkel, 47, feigned compassion for those he chatted with, while offering step-by-step instructions on how to take their lives.
