Walk into the Northlands Rescue Mission’s thrift store on any Wednesday, and amid the racks of clothes you’ll find Diane Altendorf and Kathy Ashe sorting donations. The Grand Forks residents have volunteered together with the homeless shelter for the past two years and have had a ball doing it.
Northlands Rescue Mission will provide a turkey dinner for program participants, shelter guests and members of the community from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thanksgiving Day at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 319 S. Fifth St., Grand Forks.
The United Way has been a great source of help. The organization’s efforts to unite the community to make an impact has brought great help to our organization, the Northlands Rescue Mission, for decades.
The Northlands Rescue Mission in Grand Forks is sheltering people in record numbers, executive director Dave Sena said in a press release. Sena said 129 people slept at the homeless facility earlier this month.
The Northlands Rescue Mission in Grand Forks is at full capacity, and may need to start a waiting list if the number of homeless seeking shelter continues to rise, according to Executive Director Dave Sena. The shelter had nine new residents check in Monday for a total of 125. Six of the residents are sleeping on mattresses in an overflow area.
The so-called “Kick Start Lab” offers laptops, printers and digital cameras to help mission residents reenter the workforce and reconnect with family using the technology. Many residents, the mission said, don’t have the opportunity to keep up with technology that would help them in the work force, the mission said.
The Northlands Rescue Mission in Grand Forks is appealing for more donations before the end of the year. But with just three weeks left for an ongoing fundraising campaign, the mission has collected just $310,000 of its $600,000 goal.
