As for the logo issue, it will continue to be unresolved so as long as the leadership of the Standing Rock Sioux Nation ignores the majority voice. There cannot be closure for the reservation communities that were dragged into this battle until their ballots are counted.
What’s the best way to boost the odds that the NCAA will accept the state’s case? Clearly, the best way is the way the State Board of Higher Education has chosen: Present a united front of state and university officials to make the pro-nickname case.
When the last time a UND event featured this supposed “mascot”? The hockey games I’ve attended did not have any “mascot.” Instead, the games featured only a tribute and thank you to American Indians for sharing their history and pride with the university.
The Spirit Lake and Standing Rock Sioux tribes did not ask to be in the NCAA and State Board of Higher Education agreement, nor did we have any say in the wording of the agreement. This was not in any way a treaty between the Sioux and the NCAA and North Dakota Board of Higher Education.

The notion that the NCAA — an out-of-state authority — is not playing fair is misguided. The NCAA is not a government entity. It’s more like a private club. It makes its own rules.
And if you want to belong, you must follow its rules.
When was the last time we read a story about racism against American Indians in Grand Forks? Why do more American Indians go to UND than any other university in North Dakota?
Why did the Spirit Lake tribe vote in favor of the nickname and logo?
Why there is a “seemingly never ending controversy” surrounding the Fighting Sioux logo and tradition?
I think the answer is clear: The fact that an overwhelming majority of both American Indians and non-American Indians alike support this strong proud tradition and feel it is time to fight for it.
Those who wish to press their narrow-minded elitist agendas on the whole are doing so by using any means necessary. They do this so they can beat their chests and brag how they defeated the white man.
I grew up with these people, and this is all they seek.
