The 2013 black powder season opens up at 12noon today and runs through December 15. This years season allocated 1,166 for muzzleloader, down 116 from last year.

Organizers of a fundraiser in Wadena are looking for a few good men manly enough to participate in a beauty pageant. And, yes, facial hair is OK. “What we need are a few men who are strong enough to compete like a woman,” said Bonnie Kingsley who is organizing the “Miss Tootsie” pageant in January as a fundraiser for the Miss Wadena Scholarship Pageant.

Over the years, I’ve tried to make this column somewhat seasonal, writing about fishing in the spring and hunting in the fall, and following the latest conservation issues and outdoor topics. Because this column comes a day after Thanksgiving, that’s the theme for the week. I’m thankful and feel blessed with the opportunity to interact with the people who enjoy North Dakota’s outdoors.
The North Dakota Game and Fish Department has issued a reminder on the types of unfilled deer licenses hunters can use during the muzzleloader season.
