The Minnesota State Fair draws nearly 2 million visitors every summer so the heavy foot traffic makes it a choice location for nearly 800 businesses hawking everything from corn dogs to tractors. But officials and vendors say big profits don't come easy.
A young northwestern Minnesota woman received a chilly and warm reception Thursday, hours after receiving the coveted Princess Kay of the Milky Way crown. It was chilly because she spent most of Thursday in a 40-degree rotating, glass-walled Minnesota State Fair refrigerator.
Health officials are paying close attention to pigs and people at the Minnesota State Fair for any signs of swine flu. A strain of swine flu swept through fairs last summer, sickening over 300 people in a dozen states including Minnesota.
Smoking will be a little trickier at this year's Minnesota State Fair. A new rule limits smoking to 18 stations set up around the fairgrounds. Smokers will no longer be allowed to light up while walking down Dan Patch Avenue.
