U.S. Rep. Chip Cravaack said he plans to introduce legislation that would end federal control of some activities on Mille Lacs Lake. After the Coast Guard determined in 2010 that Mille Lacs is a “federally navigable” body of water, anglers were forced to follow rules that Cravaack said make fishing more expensive.
Anglers can keep walleye less than 17 inches long, compared with 18 inches under last year's rules. As before, one walleye 28 inches or longer may be included in the four-fish limit. Any walleye between 17 and 28 inches must be released.
On Wednesday evening, an ice sheet about a quarter-mile from shore broke off and began drifting toward the center of the lake, the second largest in Minnesota. It eventually put 150 yards of open water between about 20 ice anglers and shore. Local authorities mounted a four-hour rescue effort with hovercrafts, private boats and a State Patrol helicopter that finished about 10 p.m.
Relatives of a Maple Grove man who disappeared on Mille Lacs Lake last October say his body has been found.
