The federal health care overhaul is likely to boost enrollment in Medicaid by people who are already eligible but not currently enrolled, according to a University of Minnesota study that seeks to quantify the "welcome-mat effect."

North Dakota's Senate voted Tuesday to expand Medicaid to cover more uninsured residents of the state. The Republican-led chamber approved the bill 33-14. The House approved the measure 57-36 in February.
Lawmakers on two Senate committees recommended passing the proposed Medicaid expansion program that would provide insurance coverage to an estimated 20,000 North Dakotans who are currently living without.
Committee hearings are expected to be few in the coming week as senators review bills that were approved by the House and the House continues to consider Senate measures as the North Dakota Legislature heads toward its homestretch.
The North Dakota Legislature is slated to tackle some of the weightiest issues of the session as lawmakers enter their first full week after crossover. Among the highlights: Medicaid, oil taxes and the ongoing debate over selling bottle rockets in the state.
