Children arrive for SPA
Dear Shirley,
This old house is really rocking. Annie is here from Bismarck going to SPA for four weeks at South Middle School. The twins are here for two weeks from Colorado along with their brother, Curtis, and their mother. The twins are in SPA for fourth graders at Red River High School.

Lull is prelude to June explosion of activity
Dear Shirley,
I wish you could have been with us in Bismarck as we celebrated Jack’s graduation from Century High School. It was a joyous event. And, of course I drove across North Dakota thinking of him as a little boy. He was our first grandchild. He was quite a rascal. He used to like it when I took him up to the Grand Forks Herald to see Jeff Tiedeman. He knew Tiede would always have some candy at his desk.

Stern mothers turn into soft, doting grandmothers
Breakfast in bed. Burnt toast. Handmade cards that say, “I love you.”
Those are some of the rewards for mothers today. But the best is yet to be. There comes a time when mothers become grandmothers. They no longer are stern, penny-pinching parents. Instead, with the grandfather, they can sit back and dote on grandchildren.

After Honor Flight, an old Marine writes notes of thanks
Ray Spicer has seen cities such as Denver and Minneapolis. But he had never — in all of his 85 years — seen Washington D.C. And when he got home this past week, he said he never realized how massive it was with all of the high buildings. “And they all looked so new.”

The Donut Lady of Argyle is better than the Easter bunny
Carol Michalek of Argyle, Minn., doesn’t give out recipes for her donuts because she doesn’t have one. She’s been making donuts by the dozens for so long that the recipe is second nature. I found out for sure that she uses some vanilla and nutmeg for flavor. And that she is known as “The Donut Lady” of Argyle.

Toddlers with delayed language rally for music
When words won’t come, music draws them out.
And that is why Lindsey Nelson likes working with toddlers who are language delayed. She goes Wednesday mornings to lead sessions at St. Michael’s school. And she sees music therapy in her future.

Vivid memories of World War II last a lifetime for veteran
If anyone asked him 10 or 20 years ago, Ray Spicer avoided questions about his experiences in World War 11. But Ray turned 85 this past week, and he now doesn’t mind saying that war is hell. He has vivid memories of going in with a second wave of Marines to take over Peleliu Island in the South Pacific when it was a stronghold of the Japanese.

Lambie Pie should remember Snookums on Valentine’s Day
He calls her Angel Face. She calls him Poopsie.
It takes all kinds of names to express true love on Valentine’s Day. Some of the best I found floating around the files of the Herald are Chicabiddy, Cup Cake, Snookums, Angel and Babe.
