Dr. Joshua Wynne answers the question: In a previous column, you talked about the use of mammography for breast cancer screening. A recent story in the news questioned its value. Can you help me understand this latest development?
Q. I am a 43-year-old woman, and I’m trying to decide whether I should undergo a yearly mammogram. My gynecologist just told me that her national organization recommends this, but I recall that a national panel did not. What should I do?
Rhonda McCartt was in shock when a mammogram and biopsy revealed precancerous cells in her breast.
In the past, such a diagnosis would have been a signal to wait and worry, with close monitoring to see whether the cells became cancerous. These days, as doctors detect potential cancers earlier, they’re also trying to stop cancer before it starts.
Cancer first robbed Nancy DeWolf of one of her breasts. Then it took something even more precious — her confidence and sense of control over her body.
DeWolf was only 37 in 2004 when she had a mammogram at the urging of her primary care physician. Because of her murky family history — DeWolf is adopted — the doctor thought she shouldn’t wait until age 40, the recommended age for a first mammogram.
