A Minnesota man ticketed for disorderly conduct after he flung $1,000 in mostly small bills over a balcony at the nation's largest mall during a heavy holiday shopping day wants to give away more money, he said on Monday.
The Mall of America has stepped up security following the deadly attack by the Somali militant group al-Shabab at a mall in Nairobi, Kenya. Officials at the Bloomington mall say some of the extra security precautions will be noticeable and some won't be.
Construction at Minnesota's Mall of America will result initially in 50 new shops, more eateries, another luxury hotel and an office tower. An NHL-sized skating rink and world class water park are on the drawing board, too.
The owners of the Bloomington megamall, Triple Five Group, say the $1.5 billion project would double the size of the mall, add hotels, a waterpark, performing arts center, officer towers and hundreds of stores. The owners have not indicated when the expansion project would begin.
It's been 20 years since Mall of America in Bloomington made its debut. The shopping and tourism destination is marking the milestone with a birthday celebration on Friday and Saturday. The mall opened to the public on August 11, 1992.
Raheem Aaron Waheed, 52, was driving a rental truck that struck a concrete-and-steel support beam Friday evening, causing the beam to fall and crush the truck's cab.Authorities said the truck was too tall for the parking ramp.
The project would be another step in the Bloomington megamall's long-planned, often-delayed expansion. Kurt Hagen is an executive with mall owner Triple Five Group. He says his group is trying to lock down the final financing arrangements.
The cast from the upcoming movie "The Hunger Games" will visit Bloomington's Mall of America next week. Cast members will sign autographs and hold a question-and-answer session for fans on Friday. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Alexander Ludwig and Amandla Stenberg are among cast members scheduled to attend.
