There were prayers, hymns, scripture and some tears Wednesday during a worship service at United Lutheran Church in Grand Forks aimed at reconciliation in the long-running labor dispute between American Crystal Sugar Co. and its 1,300 locked-out union workers.
Two regional Lutheran bishops will attend the ecumenical worship service at 5:30 p.m. today in United Lutheran Church downtown Grand Forks open to “persons who care about the five American Crystal Sugar plants along the (Red River) Valley – farmers/growers, union workers, management and their neighbors – to gather together simply for prayers, songs and readings from scripture,” according to organizers.
Trinity Lutheran Church in Carrington, N.D., voted to leave the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. That brings to 30 the number of congregations in the twin synods bordering the Red River - or about 6 percent of the total - which have opted out of the nation's largest Lutheran body over the controversial vote in 2009 to allow clergy to live in same-sex relationships.

Congregation becomes first in Minnesota to leave ELCA for NALC The Rev. Tim Lundeen, pastor of Grace Lutheran in Erskine, said the congregation voted out of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on Aug. 22 and was one of 18 founding congregations of the nascent North American Lutheran Church.
