Former Leevers building back in business
Leevers closed its doors in 2007, and questions about the future of the 35,000-square-foot supermarket remained unanswered until last year.

Old Leevers building in for a facelift
September 18, 2011
Ann Pederson, Grand Forks, letter: Yes, old Target was considered for library
The Target location was also one of the original sites under consideration. Unfortunately, that location was not for sale and could only be leased by the library. Largely because a leased option was not considered a financially practical solution for a new library, the site was not considered further.

Margie Cummings, East Grand Forks, letter: Give Leevers site another careful look
The citizens want the library at the Leevers location. This still is the best choice. So many citizens can’t be wrong; maybe a little vision is all that’s needed.
By Margie Cummings , January 30, 2011
OUR OPINION: Officials kept Leevers site on list for too long
Too much attention was given to a site that city and/or library officials should have ruled out from the start.

John Johnson, East Grand Forks, letter: Public has right idea on Leevers site
I think it would be wise for city leaders to heed the wishes of the public. One needs only to look to this past November to see what happened to elected officials who strayed from the wants of the electorate.

Don Lemon, Grand Forks, letter: Leevers site comes with too many disadvantages
I’m not sure that the 71 percent of citizens who chose the Leevers site for a new library thought clearly about the difficulties of that location.
By Don Lemon , December 26, 2010
OUR OPINION -- Bottom line: Library commands solid support
The main question of whether Grand Forks residents want a new library has been answered. They do.

Ann Porter, Grand Forks, letter: Leevers site best serves GF’s needs
Let’s think about a location that’s visible, centralized and accessible for the entire community. The Eighth Avenue and South Washington location can be a library for all people.

Henry Hayertz, Grand Forks, letter: ‘Powers that be’ want south-end library
My guess is that it already has been decided that the new library will be built and that it will be located by the new gym — excuse me, Wellness Center.

Gordon Iseminger, Grand Forks, column: Location + community + stewardship = Leevers site
For those who frequent the library now and for the young people whose support will be needed to assure the success of the new library, it is critically important that the Wellness Center site is 40 blocks south of the Leevers site.

Peg O’Leary, Grand Forks, column: Leevers site honors GF’s past, present, future
Andrew Carnegie’s 175th birthday is today — Thanksgiving Day. Carnegie donated two libraries to Grand Forks — one downtown and one at UND.
What better way to honor his memory and continue his legacy than by putting our new library where all the people can readily access it?
By Peg O’Leary , November 24, 2010
Anne Trenda, Grand Forks, letter -- Leevers location: Central, accessible
Moving the library to 40th Avenue South would do a great disservice to the children of Grand Forks who ride their bikes to the current library after school and during the summer.
By Anne Trenda , November 20, 2010
OUR OPINION: Leevers site best suits a new library in Grand Forks
OUR VIEW: On balance, the Leevers site strikes us as the best one for the new library. That’s almost entirely because of the property’s prominent location toward the north-center of town.
