Leevers Foods is buying Wally’s Supermarket in Devils Lake. Leevers, which originated in Devils Lake and already owns Leevers County Market in the city, is buying the community’s only other supermarket from Nash Finch Co., which had purchased Wally’s late last year.
After extensive remodel, former Washington Street grocery store opens as fitness club, restaurant, retail space Leevers closed its doors in 2007, and questions about the future of the 35,000-square-foot supermarket remained unanswered until last year.
Construction workers are ripping off parts of the exterior of the former Leevers grocery store on South Washington Street in Grand Forks as work begins to rehabilitate the old building and reopen it as a mix of smaller stores.
The Target location was also one of the original sites under consideration. Unfortunately, that location was not for sale and could only be leased by the library. Largely because a leased option was not considered a financially practical solution for a new library, the site was not considered further.
I think it would be wise for city leaders to heed the wishes of the public. One needs only to look to this past November to see what happened to elected officials who strayed from the wants of the electorate.
For those who frequent the library now and for the young people whose support will be needed to assure the success of the new library, it is critically important that the Wellness Center site is 40 blocks south of the Leevers site.
