After 35 years in business, the Kmart store here will close its doors. The retail giant said Wednesday that it won’t renew the lease for the store, 1201 Paul Bunyan Drive N.W., attached to the Paul Bunyan Mall. Store manager Tim Hayen said he was informed of the closing Tuesday and has talked with store employees to let them know.
Marge Hames set up again today across the street from the New Ulm Kmart, one of 15 stores that Sears Holding plans to close. Hames has two signs that read "Keep Kmart Open" and "These 'associates' are friends, neighbors and family."
Local stores say they will stay open At a time when holiday season sales overall have turned out better than expected, Sears Holdings Corp. was an exception: It said Tuesday that it will close 100 to 120 Sears and Kmart stores after disappointing holiday sales.

Dozens of Kmart customers across the country have received calls this holiday season from managers telling them anonymous donors have paid off their layaway accounts. This past week, that Secret Santa spirit reached Grand Forks. Steve Gackle, manager of the Grand Forks Kmart on South Washington Street, said 13 accounts total have been paid off at different times, three by a family and 10 others by two men who came in at the same time but didn’t know each other.
At Kmart stores across the country, Santa seems to be getting some help: Anonymous donors are paying off strangers' layaway accounts. The benefactors generally ask to help families who are squirreling away items for young children, often paying for toys or clothes.
Police are looking for multiple suspects believed to have robbed a 20-year-old man of his belongings as he walked home from the south Fargo Kmart at 2301 S. University Drive on Tuesday night, said Sgt. Mike Mitchell of the Fargo Police Department.
