U.S. employers hired more workers than expected in November and the jobless rate hit a five-year low of 7.0 percent, raising chances the Federal Reserve could start ratcheting back its bond-buying stimulus as soon as this month.
Area business leaders and legislators are looking to higher education institutions to help solve a worker shortage here and across North Dakota. In a meeting of businesspeople and lawmakers Wednesday morning that also touched on infrastructure funding and child care.
Debbie Storrs is the new dean UND’s College of Arts and Sciences. This fall, 3,013 students enrolled in the college, which encompasses social sciences, arts and the natural sciences, and is the university’s largest college.
The Department of Employment and Economic Development reported that employers added 1,200 jobs in October, bringing the unemployment rate to 4.8 percent. That’s the same rate as December 2007, according to DEED.
Sheridan Davis was one of about 1,300 high school sophomores from around the Red River Valley who participated in the 2013 Northern Valley Career Expo. The expo has grown from 19 schools in 2012, its first year, to 23 this year.
Oil and gas companies are showing more interest in the three-year-old department as a talent pool for future employees. And the 200 or so students that are currently enrolled there are joining a workforce that is projected to grow by 17 percent by 2020.
