Grand Forks Central High School senior Bishop Jensen was among about 30 iPhone 5 shoppers who arrived before the 8 a.m. store opening, two hours earlier than normal. Manager James McFarland said the early crowd was triple the size of a typical Apple phone launch.
Orders for the iPhone 5 topped 2 million in the first 24 hours after Apple started taking them at 12 midnight Pacific time on Friday. That's more than double the amount of iPhone 4S orders on its first full day.
Industry analysts are already predicting that Apple's iPhone 5, widely expected to be unveiled on Wednesday, will be the best-selling smartphone of all time. Each new iPhone has outsold the previous version, and the iconic device has been the top-selling mobile phone since its 2007 debut.
A new iPhone is getting much of the attention, but Apple's older phones will get a software upgrade this fall as well. A new operating system sports a different mapping service and a built-in bond with Facebook.
