A pregnant young woman who was feeling ill was headed to the hospital with her husband early Sunday when the car they were riding in was struck in a hit and run, killing them both, but their baby boy survived and was born prematurely, authorities and a relative said.
Authorities say the infant was resting in a tent with his father and mother at the Beaver Falls Campground when a woman backed her van over and through the tent. The mother and baby were dragged under the vehicle.
The child was taken to Redwood Falls Area Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The mother was in stable condition. Their names haven’t been released.
The state Board of Medicine is to hear Renelique’s case in Tampa on Friday and determine whether to strip his license. The state attorney’s homicide division is investigating, though no charges have been filed. Terry Chavez, a spokeswoman with the Miami-Dade County State Attorney’s Office, said this week that prosecutors were nearing a decision.
Dr. Paul Grabb said he operated on Sam Esquibel at Memorial Hospital for Children in Colorado Springs, Colo., after an MRI showed a microscopic tumor on the newborn's brain. Sam was 3 days old and otherwise healthy. Grabb said that while removing the growth, he discovered it contained a nearly perfect foot and the formation of another foot, a hand and a thigh.
