The start of Minnesota's second licensed wolf hunt is less than a month away, and opponents are gearing up to try to stop it. The wolf population in the state has dropped by more than 700 animals since last year's hunt. Despite that decline state officials say the iconic animal is still thriving.
Morning comes early in sharptail camp. We slither out of our down cocoons into the heavy dew before dawn. A hunter wouldn’t have to get out of the tent this early to hunt sharptails, these native grouse of the short-grass prairie.
All that was left were footprints leading away from Christopher Dorner's burned-out pickup truck, and enormous, snow-covered mountains where he could be hiding among hundreds of cabins, deep canyons and dense woods.
