The worst U.S. drought in more than half a century has weakened the safety net for the 50 million Americans who struggle to get enough to eat, and the nation's food banks are raising the alarm as the holiday season gets into full swing.
Some have advanced degrees and remember middle-class lives. Some work selling lingerie or building websites. They are white, black and Hispanic, young and old, homeowners and homeless. What they have in common: They're all on food stamps.
More Minnesota students are signing on for free or reduced-price meals, as middle-class families coping with cutbacks and foreclosures are becoming first-time users of the subsidized National School Lunch Program. It reflects a surge seen nationally.
The devastating famine in the Horn of Africa threatens al-Shabab's hold on areas under its control, with the militants fearing that the disaster will drive away the people they tax and conscript into military service.
The United Nations estimates that more 11 million people in East Africa are affected by the drought, with 3.7 million in Somalia among the worst-hit because of the ongoing civil war in the country. Somalia's prolonged drought became a famine in part because neither the Somali government nor many aid agencies can fully operate in areas controlled by al-Qaida-linked militants, and the U.N. is set to declare all of southern Somalia a famine zone as of Aug. 1.

In Minnesota alone, we throw out more than 715 million pounds of food each year. State officials say that’s how much we send to landfills or garbage burners. Hunger relief organizations are increasing their efforts to save the portion of that food that’s edible — and get it to hungry Minnesotans.
The bulk of the donations will consist of more than 1.1 billion pounds of food that doesn't sell or can't be sold because it's close to expiration dates. The company estimates the food will provide 1 billion meals.
Vitit Muntarbhorn said North Korea’s regime stopped small-scale farming and closed local markets last year as part of a long-term clampdown on the agricultural sector. Thieving from the military is also hurting the income of farmers and contributing to hunger, he said.
The Great Plains Food Bank study found that an alarming percentage of those using food shelves in North Dakota have had to choose between buying food and paying for housing, utilities or medicine, and many have skipped or skimped on meals.
