Roy Jensen, 100, Willmar, Minn., who served in the state House from 1951-54 and is thought to be the oldest living ex-lawmaker, received a standing ovation from a couple of dozen other former lawmakers gathered for an annual mock legislative session where they debated issues like they did when they served.
UPDATED 4:05 P.M. The retooled health overhaul bill House Speaker Nancy Pelosi presented today delivers on many of President Barack Obama's goals for reshaping the U.S. health care system, she said. It represents months of negotiations to bridge differences between liberal and moderate Democrats.
Many predict that the Minnesota governor candidates in the Legislature, including House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher who more than anyone can affect the tone of the session, will want to get out early and hit the campaign trail. On the other hand, some Capitol insiders claim that the candidates will feel they can get more free publicity by filibustering at the Legislature, so the crowded race actually could prolong the session.
Polls show Gov. John Hoeven beating Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., in a Senate race by quite a large margin and Kevin Cramer very close to Rep. Earl Pomeroy, D-N.D., in a House race. When the Democrats are in control of everything in Washington, these polls tell party leaders there is no place to hide.
Democratic Rep. John Murtha tells WJPA-AM Radio in western Pennsylvania that Congress is going to “do it right” when it comes to passing health care legislation. But he says it’s not clear it will get done before January. And he says it may not get done then.
