A day doesn’t go by without someone asking me about North Dakota’s economic success. Because of the energy boom and the hard work of people across the state, our unemployment rate is the lowest in the nation, and our tax revenue is hitting record highs.
Using expensive and misleading ads, “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” condemns Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., for her recent vote on gun control. The group would have us believe that Heitkamp and Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., are sympathetic toward those who commit violence with firearms.
North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp is among the state's politicians mourning the death of former Gov. William Guy. Heitkamp issued a statement from her verified Twitter account Friday, saying she was saddened by the news.
Thanks to the efforts by Heitkamp — a co-sponsor of the bill — and our other representatives in Washington, brick-and-mortar stores in North Dakota now are one step closer to competing on a level playing field with online retailers.
In her maiden speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate Tuesday, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., called for the federal government to “level the playing field” and allow states to collect sales taxes on Internet sales.
As Heidi Heitkamp eked out a North Dakota Senate race decided by less than 3,000 votes last year, one topic that rarely came up was gun rights. Now that Heitkamp is a freshman senator in Washington, an issue that once hardly registered has quickly become a defining one.
North Dakotans are overwhelmingly conservative in their social values. Respect for all human life and the sanctity of marriage as defined as being between a man and a woman is the majority view in North Dakota.
North Dakota’s senators are on different sides of the political aisle, but they do agree on one thing: The Senate’s gun control debate should focus more on dealing with the mentally ill and criminals than on expanding background checks to buy those weapons.
