Most of the Minnesota layoffs will occur at Supervalu's corporate offices in Eden Prairie, although there will also be layoffs at Supervalu's distribution centers, and roughly 20 people will be laid off at its Cub Foods regional offices, said Mike Siemienas, a Supervalu spokesman.
Nash Finch company officials announced Tuesday it has bought Wally’s Supermarket in Devils Lake, where Fred Nash opened his first confectionery store in 1885. Meanwhile, the Grand Forks-based owner of Hugo's Family Marketplace supermarkets -- supplied by Nash Finch -- is purchasing the Wally's in Grafton, N.D.

Companies such as Target, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Whole Foods Market Inc. have worked to change their seafood policies as concern continues to rise about overfishing and the environmental effects of certain fishing methods.
Minnesota-based grocery chain Supervalu says the recession is still hurting its bottom line as food prices remained low, stores closed and strained customers continued to pare spending despite deep discounting.
Retailers, who begrudgingly went along when food makers pushed up prices to recoup record-high costs, are flexing newfound muscle and demanding price cuts to match the recent steep retreat in ingredient costs. Food makers are resisting, saying the uncertain economy and volatile costs make price cuts unwise. But retailers aren't backing down.
