Forecasting floods: There are no guarantees
Donald Schwert, a geology professor and flood expert at North Dakota State University in Fargo, pointed out that the Red River Valley is unlike most others – it’s not even much of a valley – so traditional forecasting methods don’t work very well on it. But the 1997 Flood brought many changes and advances, and the record high water of 2009 helped forecasters by giving them new data on how the river behaves at those levels, said Greg Gust, warning coordination meteorologist at the weather service in Grand Forks.

Potential flood conditions a 'keg of dynamite'
“This year, we have a system that is charged and ready,” said Greg Gust, warning coordination meteorologist at the weather service in Grand Forks. “We’re sitting on virtually the same keg of dynamite, if you will, from a precursor condition that we had last year.”

Red at Fargo, Moorhead drops, but nobody calling fight a victory yet
Fargo-Moorhead got a slight reprieve Saturday, as it appears that, for now, the Red River has crested at a slightly lower level than expected. While the news brought a sense of cautious optimism to those on the front lines of the flood fight, officials on both sides of the river urged people to stay “on full alert” against breaks in dikes and levees.
