With about $9,000 collected so far, one of Grand Forks’ oldest charities hasn’t reached its goal for the year and welcomes public donations. Santa Claus Girls, which was founded by Herald employees 97 years ago, provides toys for needy children that are paid for by donations.
Toys are being collected for Grand Forks-area children in need by WDAZ TV and Whalen’s Moving and Storage. To help, bring unwrapped toys to the WDAZ parking lot, 2220 S. Washington St., and help fill up the Whalen’s truck between now and Dec. 3.
American Girl Doll of the Year authors Jessie Haas (2013) and Jane Kurtz (2010) will be at the Ethiopia Reads fundraiser from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Sharon Lutheran Church, 1720 S. 20th St., Grand Forks.
For the past two decades, Arthur Bakken’s annual $500 donation to Santa Claus Girls has meant more to him than just supporting a good cause. One of Grand Forks’ oldest charities, Santa Claus Girls was founded 97 years ago by Herald employees and provides toys for needy children.
Maintaining the spirit of its organization, Grand Forks’ Santa Claus Girls has raised its fundraising goal to $18,000 this year to meet the needs of more children in the community, said Anita Geffre, president of the group and the Herald’s finance director.

The Arthritis Foundation Upper Midwest Region will hold its Arthritis Walk Saturday at Choice Health & Fitness in Grand Forks. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. followed by a talk from KayleighAnn, who was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at age 7.
