After the 1997 flood, homeowners faced questions of what to keep and what to throw on the trash heap, what to restore and what to tear down and replace.
The same questions hovered over the city’s historic properties, and at times they were resolved after many hours of work and debate.

Remembering the flood of '97: Red River crests 15 years ago today
Fifteen years ago today on Tuesday April 22, 1997, the Red River crested at 54.35 feet in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks, marking a turning point in the worst flood the cities had ever endured. Ninety percent of Grand Forks’ 52,500 residents and all of East Grand Forks’ 9,000 residents were evacuated.

Remembering the flood of '97: Red River breaks through 15 years ago today
Fifteen years ago today, on Friday, April 18, 1997, it became clear the Red River had won. Boils began to appear in the dike protecting Grand Forks’ Lincoln Park area around 4:15 a.m. Ordered by the city to evacuate before dawn, neighborhood residents, including 106 in the Almonte nursing home, left. A few blocks away, the surging river poured over a 12-foot-high dike on Lincoln Drive, roaring like a waterfall and threatening to blow open the dike.

Fifteen years ago today, the Grand Forks region fought what, by then, had become the Flood of the Century. Here’s what happened according to the Herald: Hundreds began moving out of their homes as it became clear dikes in low-lying neighborhoods were failing. City officials on both sides of the Red told them to leave, not wishing to “gamble on the integrity of the dikes and sandbags.”

Former neighborhoods live on, after '97 flood, in parks
Tom Reiten and Joan Abraham were the last people to leave the Lincoln Drive neighborhood after the 1997 flood. The homeowners at 1207 Lincoln Drive held out until 2001, when the dike alignment forced their ouster. It was a sad parting of residents and their real estate, as most were in those times. The couple’s attachment to their property was stronger than many, however. Four years after the devastation, they not only still lived on their property, but also mowed the lawns and trimmed the hedges of former neighbors.

Church reflects on turmoil of flood and years after
The Rev. Ted Schuldt came to town last month to serve the church hit worse than any other in Grand Forks by the Flood of 1997. The new shepherd of First Presbyterian Church, he said he quickly realized that the 15th anniversary this week of the disaster seems a big deal, even this far down the road.

Former Grand Forks Mayor Pat Owens said Clinton’s 1997 visit to the devastated communities put him in the midst of evacuated residents who were “desperate,” “dirty” and reduced to “refugees” as they sought shelter at Grand Forks Air Force Base.

Stories of recovery in GF give hope
The first delegation to visit Grand Forks for disaster recovery advice came from Tarboro, N.C., scarred by flooding in 1999. Next to arrive was St. Bernard’s Parish, La., hit by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The latest in a line of communities seeking counsel was Cedar Rapids, Iowa, flooded in 2008.
