The Farm Rescue organization is getting a large donation from the Otto Bremer Foundation and Bremer Bank. The donations total $200,000 over two years and will be used for equipment, training and general operations.
Charles Hardie couldn’t help but smile as he sat atop the combine with blades chewing down stalks of yellow corn at a rhythmic pace near here Thursday afternoon. The 900 acres of corn belong to Dan and Rose Dotzenrod and their son Ben. Hardie, a retired farmer, is a volunteer for Farm Rescue.
The farm aid organization Farm Rescue this fall will help its 200th farmer in the Upper Midwest. The first man to receive help from the organization says he's a little surprised that it has grown so quickly.
A unique farm aid organization started in North Dakota six years ago by an airplane pilot has grown steadily from its humble beginnings with less than a handful of volunteers and very little money and is now expanding into its fifth state.
With his wife battling cancer and five children to look out for — the youngest of whom is 2 years old — Matt Klemetson has a lot more to worry about than planting corn. On Tuesday, a few neighbors and friendly strangers stopped by to help pick up the slack. Four volunteers from Farm Rescue took on the job of planting 300 acres of corn at Klemetson’s farm, freeing him up for a hospital visit with his family. They’ll also plant 300 acres of soybeans. Based in Jamestown, N.D., Farm Rescue operates in Minnesota, the Dakotas, and eastern Montana.
The North Dakota-based operation provides planting and harvesting aid to farm families who have gone through a major illness, injury or disaster. It helps with the actual farm work rather than doling out money. Each family can receive help on up to 1,000 acres.
Russell Carlson couldn't see the combines rolling through his wheat field from his hospital bed in Bismarck. The distance was too great and his injuries too severe for him to see the neighbors and Farm Rescue harvest his crop.
