More than a decade ago, many North Dakota schools -- especially those in rural areas -- were facing declining enrollments. Since the oil boom hit at the end of the last decade, that trend has reversed, and not just in the Oil Patch but throughout North Dakota.
With student enrollment at an all-time high, North Dakota’s largest business school is considering building a new facility. Total student enrollment this fall at UND’s College of Business and Public Administration is 2,007, nearly double what J. Gamble Hall was designed to hold when it was built in 1968, said Laura Dvorak, spokeswoman for the business college.
New, growing partnerships with North Dakota businesses and UND could help make up for dwindled state support on the east side of the Red River for Northland Community and Technical College, said President Anne Temte Thursday.
Freshmen enrollment at UND is at its lowest in the past five years, with 19 percent fewer first-year students this fall compared with 2012, and university officials say the reason is broader than their previous claims of a more selective admissions process.
Predicting the future is no easy task, especially for cities in the booming western North Dakota Oil Patch. Predicting the future number of students at any given school in that same area may seem a daunting chore.
Final fall enrollment at UND grew significantly compared to NDSU, maintaining its hold as the largest campus in the state. Enrollment was 15,250, an increase of 553 students from last year’s record-breaking figure, according to the university.
The University of Minnesota-Crookston, reported that it broke enrollment records on its first day Tuesday, thanks to new online students.
Of the 1,773 students enrolled so far, 39 percent are online-only students, according to unofficial reports.
