Eleven months after police began investigating him, the bookkeeper suspected of embezzling more than $714,000 from a Moorhead-based church synod continues to live in the stately rural home he allegedly remodeled and expanded with the stolen money. Robert Duane Larson hasn’t been criminally charged, but Moorhead Police Lt. Tory Jacobson said the detective working on the case is nearing the end of his investigation.
Prosecutors in Winona are investigating if charges should be filed in an incident where an off-duty police officer from Illinois fired her gun into the ground at a campsite after she interrupted a dispute.
New Brighton police are asking for the public’s help in solving the murder of a retired firefighter. Lee Allen Goodwin, 70, was found dead at the bottom of a flight of basement steps last January. Police suspect someone broke into Goodwin’s home to rob him and ended up killing him. His wallet was later found in a trash bin about a mile from his house.
Officials found a snowmobile in the St. Croix River in Afton but were still looking for the a possible driver Saturday. The Washington County sheriff’s department received a call about 6:35 p.m. Friday about someone yelling for help near Windmill Marina. Witnesses also told police they found a helmet near open water on the river.

An Apple Valley, Minn., woman has admitted to embezzling about $1 million from veterans to support a gambling habit. Connie Marie Hanson, 55, pleaded guilty Friday in U.S. District Court to one count of making a false statement to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to conceal her embezzlement.
