The deadline to submit an application for the 2013 North Dakota moose, elk and bighorn sheep license lottery is March 27. Even though the odds of drawing one of these “big three” licenses is small, you of course can’t get one if you don’t fill out and send in a paper or online application.
The elk reduction effort began in 2010, when officials estimated the park herd at more than 1,200 animals. Superintendent Valerie Naylor says National Park Service staff and nearly 400 volunteer shooters the past two falls have removed 868 elk. Officials counted only 138 elk within the park's South Unit during an aerial survey in January.
Elk licenses are down by 200 over the year, to 301, because of the National Park Service's successful effort to reduce the bloated elk population in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, according to the state Game and Fish Department.
