Large church in Carrington, N.D., votes to leave ELCA 
Trinity Lutheran Church in Carrington, N.D., voted to leave the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. That brings to 30 the number of congregations in the twin synods bordering the Red River - or about 6 percent of the total - which have opted out of the nation's largest Lutheran body over the controversial vote in 2009 to allow clergy to live in same-sex relationships.

For the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America -- and other Protestant churches -- more churches with different backgrounds and races are needed. But getting diverse people into the same church is often not that easy. Minnesota has the largest number of ELCA members of any state, with close to 800,000 baptized members. Nationwide, the ELCA has nearly 4.5 million members. Only about 3 percent are people of color.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America released Thursday a proposed social statement, “Genetics, Faith and Responsibility,” revised somewhat since a draft last year raised controversy among members who said it rejected modern farming practices such as genetically-modified seed.
