A bill approved 61-33 Wednesday by the House updates North Dakota’s law regarding grand juries and increases the number of petition signatures required for citizen-initiated grand jury investigations. The floor testimony did not reference the petition filed in Dunn County that seeks a grand jury investigation of Gov. Jack Dalrymple related to campaign contributions he received from oil companies.
A second petition seeking a grand jury investigation of Gov. Jack Dalrymple related to oil industry campaign contributions was filed Monday in Dunn County District Court, signed by more than 250 people.
Some citizens in Dunn Count, N.D., have been trying to initiate a grand jury to consider the conflict of interest involved in campaign contributions to Gov. Jack Dalrymple by energy companies regulated by the Industrial Commission.
North Dakota law spells outs how county residents can use a petition to convene a grand jury. The petition must be signed by eligible voters, with at least as many signatures as 10 percent of the total number of votes cast for governor in the most recent general election. Dunn County had 1,670 voters in 2008, meaning 167 signatures were required.
A report written by two attorneys highlights these contributions to Gov. Jack Dalrymple’s campaign from Jan. 1, 2011 through May 2012 from donors who had an interest in a controversial Dunn County oil development area.
Residents of Dunn County want a grand jury to decide if campaign contributions Gov. Jack Dalrymple accepted from the oil industry may be considered bribery. The petition signed by more than 170 stems from money Dalrymple’s campaign accepted while he was also serving as the head of the North Dakota Industrial Commission.
A group of residents in Dunn County is opposing a Bismarck company's plan to build an oil field waste landfill near Dodge. Waste Solutions LLP is seeking permission to store solid oil field waste in an open, lined pit on about 120 acres of land two miles south of Dodge, a town of fewer than 100 people.
Dunn County will lift its crew camp moratorium June 1. The Board of County Commissioners decided Wednesday that it will also ask the planning and zoning committee to set parameters on the number of beds and locations if different from what is stated in the zoning ordinance.
The committee will return with its recommendations at the June 6 county commissioners meeting.
Officials are cutting the ribbon this afternoon on another large so-called man camp in the western North Dakota oil patch, this one a 600-worker housing facility in Dunn County. A co-worker found the body of 21-year-old Dustin Bergsing of Edgar, Mont., on Saturday at a remote oil well in Dunn County. An autopsy was done but Dr. William Massello says he didn't reach any immediate conclusions.
Rural Dickinson state Sen. George Nodland says one term in the North Dakota Legislature is enough. The 66-year-old Nodland says he won't run for re-election next year. He represents District 36 in southwestern North Dakota. The region includes most of Stark County, part of Dunn County and western Morton County.
Corde Thomas Fredericks, 21, a former Killdeer High School wrestling star, could light up the room with a smile. But that smile is gone now as he died suddenly Thursday and the cause is unclear, family members said. He loved extreme sports and had "a fearless attitude," his brother, Allias Fredericks, said. The only thing matching that attitude was the size of his heart, family and friends said.
