Shalane Flanagan, a native of Marblehead, Mass., who lives in Portland, Ore., was fourth in her Boston debut in 2:27:08 and training partner Kara Goucher, who was raised in Duluth, was sixth in 2:28:11. Goucher, 34, was previously third in Boston in 2009 and fifth in 2011.
Duluth pilot Kevin Ferris, who died in a small-plane crash after flying into fog March 29, did not have the instrument rating recommended for the weather conditions forecast for his destination of Moorhead, according to a federal transportation report.

The two inmates who disappeared from a low-security prison camp in Duluth over the weekend are still missing. They were discovered missing Saturday evening from the federal camp, which is on the former Duluth Air Force Base.
The Duluth teenager accused of stabbing and bludgeoning to death a Lincoln Park man in his residence earlier this month appeared in juvenile court Thursday as the prosecution argued that there is sufficient evidence for him to stand trial for murder.
The former St. Louis County Jail in Duluth may be on its way to a new future as an apartment building. Developer Grant Carlson, a principal partner in Jail Holding LLC, which owns the building at 521 W. Second St., is turning away from original plans to market the property as commercial/office space after analyzing the local market.
