S.D. mother sues company, alleges sex discrimination 
A Sioux Falls mother who once worked for Midcontinent Communications has filed a federal lawsuit against the company alleging sex discrimination. Donethia Harris filed the suit last week in U.S. District Court in Sioux Falls, saying she was fired when complications with her pregnancy forced her to take an extended leave of absence.

Pepsi Beverages Co. has agreed to pay $3.1 million to settle federal charges of race discrimination for using criminal background checks to screen out job applicants. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says the company's policy of not hiring workers with arrest records disproportionately excluded more than 300 black applicants.

The U.S. Labor Department says one of the nation's largest meatpackers systematically discriminated against more than 4,000 qualified applicants who sought entry-level jobs at a turkey processing plant in Arkansas. The government seeks to cancel more than $550 million in contracts with the U.S. Defense Department and prevent future contracts until the company stops what they call discriminatory practices.

Sauk Rapids will pay a former city employee $31,271.57 to settle a gender discrimination claim, according to settlement documents obtained Friday by the Times. Michelle Hoppe resigned her job last month as receptionist/office clerk in the city's building safety department after reaching a preliminary settlement with the city that was approved by the City Council.
